“Gracious” Singapore

Posted on | September 16, 2009 | No Comments

After 1 year plus of Gracious Singapore campaign, i feel that the result is quite disappointing.

The ugly behavior of commuters is the most common example. Youngsters not giving up seats to elderly and pretend to be sleeping even though they are not, commuters acts rowdy trying to push their way into the train, and not forgetting the cursing and swearing if things does not go their way. Personally I have experienced an ang mo throwing curses at me for blocking his entry. I supposed a simple “Excuse me” will better signal his intention, then standing there like a wooden log.

Recently, the incidents  got worst.

  • A woman got whacked by a well educated guy for no reason at Bishan MRT. [STOMP]
  • A man punched a woman for stepping on his toes on an MRT train. [AsiaOne]

Back in the 90s, I feel that people are more tolerant and  forgiving. Now, it seems like we are moving backwards to barbaric times. What has trigger the change? Society itself, economy improvement or mass increased in foreigner population?

As the saying goes, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. These behaviors tell us so much about the person. It is an embarrassment to himself as well as a nuisance to the society. If everyone exercise more tolerance, less egoistic, Singapore will become a fine place to live in.
