The ever popular micro-blogging site, Twitter, has become a channel where spammers and hackers broadcast their Malware through links hidden in their tweets. To make the problem worst, Twitter uses shorten URL, like bit.ly, tinyurl, which prevents the users to identify the suspicious links. Based on studies conducted by Kaspersky, at least 26% of the tweets twitter messages contain links and half of those are generated by people with malicious intent.
Although, Twitter uses its own filtering mechanism developed by Google (Google Safe Browsing API), it is ineffective to filter all the Malware links.
Recommendation:
- For users of Kaspersky, fear not! Kaspersky new tool “Krab Krawler” is able to filter any Malware site links in Twitter.
- For TweetDeck users, you can enable “Show preview information for short URLs” in General tab to identify suspicious links.
- In general, do not open links from unknown users.
