Bangkok Trip

Posted on | January 10, 2010 | No Comments

Agenda for this BKK trip is shopping. After 4 hours of Jetstar delay and long queue at the Airport immigration, I am quite irritated.

To make things worst, after queuing up at the public taxi counter at B1 of the Airport, I was given a flat rate of 700B for a trip from airport to BKK City Suite Hotel, which by right will cost me around 350B. Apparently, the tourist information and travel advice is no longer valid. Anyway I feel that I am so
“carroted”.

BKK City Suite Hotel is a budget hotel with free 30mins WiFi service and International Breakfast buffet. Other than that, it is an average hotel with comfortable stay given the price. If I were to travel back to BKK again, I will definitely choose another hotel that is next to the train station or subway. It makes travelling around the shopping streets easier.

After checking in, we went to MBK for late lunch, at “The Fifth Avenue” located at MBK Level 5, which have the same concept like Marché. Currently, there is a promotion for Tourist (Ice Thai Tea free with each passport identification). There is a wide selection of cuisine from western, Japanese, Asian, Indian Chinese etc… Food is good however the price tag was at the high side.

Shopping

DAY 1

MBK Center is located Patumwan which is easily accessible by taking BTS and alighting at National Stadium Station. Quite a huge shopping mall with a wide range of selection from budget items to pricy ones. Each level sells a different category of products.

Tip: Remember to apply for Tourist Card at Level 1 Information Counter which entitles you a discount from 5% – 60% from participating outlets.

Siam Discovery/Siam Center/Siam Paragon is similar to Singapore Paragon where brand boutiques are situated. It is accessible at Siam BTS on the right, whereas on the left is Little Siam (Siam Square) where budget stalls like Bugis street is situated. There are a few streets of fashion outlets that can take you through a few hours of shopping.

Tip: Apply Tourist Card at Siam Paragon to get 5% – 7% off.

Into the night, we went to Patpong Night Market to immense into night street shopping (located near to Sala Daeng BTS Station, walk against the traffic flow). There are cheap ‘brand-name’ items, CDs, souvenirs, T-shirts on sale which I advise against buying as there are better offers at Chatuchak Weekend Market.

DAY 2

Start the day off at Central World (walk on the overhead BTS connector from Chit Lom BTS Station). Central World has 2 big departmental Store, Isetan and Zen. In addition, the popular and branded bag boutique, NaRaYa is located at Level 1, next to Samsonite Luggage Boutique. The prices for NaRaYa bags there is around 50% cheaper than local pricing.

Platinum Fashion Mall is 5-10 mins walking distance away from Central World. It is a wholesale shopping mall with more than 1,500 fashion outlets. Prices there are around 30% cheaper than from the standard shops. Good bargaining skill will bring the price lower.

DAY 3

Chatuchak Weekend Market (Mo Chit BTS) is the largest single level street market that is around 20x the size of Bugis Street. It covers a wide range of products. Bargaining skills will definitely a must to bring the already low price lower.

Travel Tips:

  • Take Taxi will be cheaper in a group of 4, remember to request to charge by meters; otherwise you need to work out the amount the driver charge you for the trip.
  • Taxi flag down charge is around 35B which runs for 2km, subsequently, 4.50B – 5.50B per km, 1.25B per min of waiting.
  • It will be wise to take public transport like BTS/MRT or buses if you are familiar with the bus service during peak hours, as Bangkok is well known for its traffic jams.
